Socotra’s remote beauty comes with challenges: limited amenities, minimal infrastructure, and the need for thoughtful packing.
I will share practical tips and a detailed packing list based on my experience. From must-have gear to items I wish I had left behind, the guide ensures your adventure to Socotra is as seamless as it is unforgettable.

Preparation for Socotra Travel
Before packing your bags, it’s crucial to understand Socotra’s remote nature.
There are limited medical facilities, no ATMs, no credit cards accepted, and very basic infrastructure.
There is very limited running water, showers, toilets, and electricity. Be prepared to tent camp each night with either no facilities or limited facilities.
The underdeveloped infrastructure is what makes this island so unique and wonderful!
Socotra Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is essential and mandatory for those traveling to Socotra – it’s a wise choice for any overseas travel, as many American insurance providers do not extend coverage beyond the U.S.
Securing insurance can be challenging due to Socotra’s association with Yemen and the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories.
While some insurers might refuse coverage, others may offer limited options. I currently recommend SafetyWing for travel insurance for this destination.
It is crucial to verify with them directly or carefully review their policies to ensure that coverage specifics for Socotra have not changed.
Internet and Mobile Connectivity
Expect little to no internet access.
Hadiboh and Qalansiya are the only two places that may have coverage, but you would need a SIM card from Etisalat when you land in the UAE, and even then, it is unreliable.
You will only have a connection for a few days when in the two large cities.
If staying connected is essential, consider bringing a Garmin InReach to stay connected to family and let them know all is good.
Essential Packing Tips for Socotra
Electronics and Charging Equipment
As you can imagine, there is little or no access to electricity.
The drivers will use car batteries to connect lighting at night, and you can ask to use their car charger when driving.
But I would not rely on this. Make sure you bring backup power and solar backup.
For camera gear, invest in dust protectors and a dry bag for water activities.
Sleeping Arrangements
In Socotra, most tours are camping trips consisting of designated camps with some facilities and wild camping with no facilities.
We were provided a tent, mat, and pillow at each camping location. I would check with the tour company as I believe some of you will need to bring your own pillow and sleeping pad.
If I had to do it again, here is what I would bring for sleeping.
- Rumpl Blanket (no sleeping bag, as it rarely gets under 70° and a blanket takes a lot less room than a sleeping bag for travel)
- Ultra Light Quick Dry Towel (2): One for water actives and one for sleeping comfort.
- Pillow Cover or T-Shirt: Use as a clean pillowcase.
Hygiene Essentials
Embracing a bit of grit and grime is part of the adventure on Socotra.
Many camps feature basic amenities, such as squat toilets with intermittent running water or outdoor showers.
Often, you will find yourself relying on nature’s call outdoors. When doing so, ensure to bury your waste at least 6 – 8″ deep, and either carry out your toilet paper or, if it’s biodegradable, you may bury it as well.
- Biodegradable cleansing wipes are lifesavers for staying fresh between sparse showers.
- Bring biodegradable toilet paper and a Kula Cloth for eco-friendly hygiene.
Food, Water, and Medicine
On most tours in Socotra, a camp chef is responsible for preparing all meals and snacks, which are enjoyed in a communal setting.
The cuisine typically features a variety of wholesome ingredients, including rice, beans, fresh fish, chicken, pasta, eggs, and flatbread. You’ll also have the opportunity to taste locally grown fruits and vegetables; the mangoes are particularly noteworthy.
Accompaniments include an assortment of things like peanut butter, honey, Nutella, crackers, dates, cookies, deserts, and a plentiful supply of tea, among others.
For those with specific dietary preferences, let the tour operator know what kind of accommodations they can make. You can always bring backpacking meals or snacks from home to ensure your dietary needs are met.
Water is supplied, but often in plastic bottles. Reduce waste with a filtered water bottle, such as the Grayl GeoPress, which is ideal for Socotra’s conditions.
Pack all personal medications, anti-diarrheal tablets, and a comprehensive first-aid kit.
Given Socotra’s remote location, it’s crucial to come fully prepared as you won’t find the convenience of nearby stores to purchase essentials.
What to Wear in Socotra
Stay cool with lightweight, breathable clothing, but be mindful of local customs.
While Socotris who work in the travel sector are accustomed to tourists and generally accept Western-style clothing and swimwear, it’s recommended to dress conservatively while in villages.
For women, this means wearing clothing that covers knees and shoulders thoroughly. While not required, covering hair is also respectful. Socotri women wear niqabs – fully covered body and face with only their eyes showing.
Men should opt for pants or long shorts, and t-shirts are acceptable. Socotri men usually wear a T-shirt and a long wrap-around skirt called a fouta.

Socotra offers many activities, from hiking, swimming in the pristine waters, snorkeling, boat rides, and more.
Packing according: snorkeling gear, comfortable hiking attire, swimwear, and camera gear to capture the beauty of it all.
