Where is Socotra?

Socotra is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, located about 150 miles east of the Horn of Africa and 211 miles south of Yemen’s mainland.

The largest and most visited island, Socotra, is celebrated for its unique biodiversity, often referred to as the “Galápagos of the Indian Ocean.”

Although officially part of Yemen, Socotra’s geographical isolation has allowed it to maintain a distinct culture and ecology.

It feels far removed from the challenges on the mainland, though some indirect impacts persist.

Yemen’s Conflict: What it Means for Socotra

Yemen has been embroiled in a complex civil war since 2014, which has led to widespread instability and humanitarian crises across the country.

Socotra has remained largely peaceful, with limited direct effects from the conflict. However, the broader situation does result in occasional challenges such as:

  • Restricted travel routes
  • Supply chain disruptions
  • Economic instability

Socotra’s relative safety is due in part to foreign interventions, particularly from the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which have provided infrastructure, medical facilities, and other resources to the island.

Foreign Intervention Socotra

UAE has funded a hospital and both Saudi and UAE have donated funds for schools and other infrastructure as well as supplies.

It was clear to me that UAE and Saudi have much more influence and provide much more help than Yemen, and appears the locals are genuinely more aligned with these countries.

I believe this influence helps to create a safe and stable environment for tourism.

Is Socotra Safe for Travelers?

The short answer is yes, but with caveats. While Socotra itself is safe, travelers must approach the journey responsibly. Key considerations include:

  • Understanding travel advisories: The U.S. State Department advises against travel to Yemen, including Socotra. However, many adventure travelers have visited Socotra without issues by following organized tours.
  • Tourism infrastructure: The island has limited amenities, and self-guided travel is not an option. Tours cover logistics, ensuring safety and a smooth experience.

Socotra Essential Safety Tips

Socotra Island offers a unique and rewarding travel destination, however, it is remote and void of some amenities you may be used to.

You cannot just pop by a store and pick up something.

The biggest risk you will face is sunburn or cuts. Here is a list of safety items I would recommend bringing:

  • Travel Insurance: is a must-have and required by tour companies – this is not as straightforward as it seems, as many companies will not cover Yemen. I recommend SafetyWing as they have a couple of exclusions if anything happens due to political unrest, but they cover medical and travel. Please read the fine print or chat with them online to ensure you understand all the parameters.
