Is it Safe to Visit Socotra?

First, a common concern many people have before visiting Socotra is about safety, especially given its association with mainland Yemen.

However, Socotra is distinct due to its location in the Indian Ocean and closer geographical ties to Africa.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia have a presence and influence in the region, providing various forms of aid and support to the local communities.

Despite initial worries from friends and family, labeling the trip as potentially risky, my extensive research and discussions with past visitors reassured me.

My experience on the island confirmed my findings – I felt completely safe throughout my visit. The locals were incredibly welcoming, kind, and laid-back, providing a sense of security and peace.

While each traveler needs to assess their comfort levels and consider travel advisories – such as those from the US Department of State which advises against travel due to ties to Yemen – I found that Socotra offered a very secure environment, and I felt very safe here.

This island is truly one of the most striking and captivating places I have ever seen.

The Beautiful Locations of Socotra

Arher Beach

Arher Beach is known for the tall white sand dunes that stretch from the mountains behind to the sea ahead.

The sand here is exceptionally soft and fine, making the climb to the top of these towering dunes a challenging yet rewarding endeavor.

Once you reach the summit, you are greeted with breathtaking views that make the effort well worth it.

This is a perfect location to capture some dramatic photography or enjoy a quiet moment watching the sunset over the horizon.

Hoq Cave

Socotra has many caves but one of the biggest is Hoq Cave.

It’s a gradual steep hike and it is hot but well worth it. The cave starts with a massive opening, going inside you will encounter many stalactites and stalagmites and overall peculiar formations.

The cave goes back into the mountain for about 2 miles.

Homhill Protected Area (Infinity Pool)

The Homill Protected Area is a beautiful area that has Dragon’s Blood Trees, bottle trees, limestone canyon, springs, and more.

We hiked along the plateau area and stream and were greeted with a natural infinity pool (Wadi Girhut) where you can swim and enjoy the view of the ocean.

Wadi Kalisan

Wadi Kalisan and hiking through the Kalisan Canyon was insane. The deep freshwater swimming pools and waterfalls were nothing short of impressive.

Diksam / Firhmin Forest – Dragon Blood Trees

Diksam Plateau and Firhmin Forest are the areas particularly famous for their dense populations of Dragon’s Blood Trees, which are unique to Socotra.

The Dragon’s Blood Tree is one of the most iconic symbols of Socotra. Exploring these areas is like being in another world.

Detwah Lagoon / Abdullah the Caveman

Detwah Lagoon is a protected nature sanctuary with one of the island’s most stunning views.

With its crystal clear blue waters and beautiful white sand beaches, best of all we were the only ones on the beach.

It is also the place to meet Abdullah the Caveman and hear his life story as you sip tea and then enjoy the tour of his cave and the lagoon area.

Shu’ab Bay Beach

We got to this beach by taking a local fishing boat from Qalansiyah village.

On the way to the beach, we saw a ton of dolphins.

Once you reach the pristine white beach, you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or relaxing. It is the bluest water I have ever seen!

Ayhaft Canyon

Ayhaft Canyon is one of the greenest areas of the island, at the end of the canyon there is a freshwater pool you can swim in.

The real beauty is being surrounded by the glorious Hajher mountains.

Hadibo

Hadibo, the capital of Socotra, offers an insight into the daily life of the island’s residents.

It is a very modest city, with basic infrastructure that includes a few essential services, local markets, traditional eateries, and a handful of basic hotels.

It is one of the only places on the island that has conveniences such as hot running water, flushable toilets, a semi-stable cell phone signal, and reliable electricity.

Hadibo possesses a unique charm that goes beyond the conventional definitions of beauty.

While the city may not boast pristine streets, there’s an undeniable warmth and simplicity. The streets are lively with the friendly banter of local men and the joyful energy of children playing, creating a vibrant community atmosphere.

Although you may encounter only a few women, their presence and friendliness, fully covered in burkas, add to the richness of local life.

What truly defines Hadibo’s beauty is its people.

Their genuine warmth, hospitality, and strong sense of community are incredible.

This connection and the raw, unfiltered daily life here make Hadibo a beautiful place in its own right, reminding us that beauty is often found in the most unexpected places.
