Matsumoto Castle Photography Guide: Japan’s Iconic Black Crow Castle

Matsumoto Castle, also known as Black Crow Castle due to its striking exterior, is one of Japan’s most iconic historic landmarks. Situated in Nagano Prefecture, this national treasure combines architectural elegance with a storied past dating back to the Sengoku period. Unlike many other Japanese castles, Matsumoto Castle retains much of its original structure, making it a must to photograph when visiting Japan. In this Matsumoto Castle photography guide, I will share my top three photo spots and some travel tips.

Best Time to Visit Matsumoto Castle

  • Spring: Late April offers cherry blossoms surrounding the castle, creating a dreamy, pastel landscape. The downside is the crowds during the Sakura season.
  • Summer: Vibrant greenery surrounds the moat, and the warm weather is perfect for evening shots, but midday can be harsh for photography due to high contrast.
  • Fall: Peak foliage typically occurs from late October to mid-November. The vivid red and yellow leaves provide stunning backdrops for your compositions.
  • Winter: Snow-covered castle grounds create a serene atmosphere, and the low-angle sunlight during this season enhances reflections in the moat. Matsumoto Illumination and Ice Sculpture Festival is on my bucket list too.

How to Get to Matsumoto Castle

  • By Car:
    • Matsumoto is accessible via the Chuo Expressway. Parking is available near the castle for a fee.
