Canyon Overlook Hike Location

The Canyon Overlook Trailhead is located near the east entrance of Zion National Park. This Canyon Overlook Trail is not a shuttle stop so you will need a private vehicle to access this trailhead.

The parking is limited so suggest arriving early (for sunrise) or later (sunset) to secure a spot and enjoy the view at the best time!

To reach the trailhead from the visitor center:

Start at the Zion Visitor Center: From the visitor center, head north on Zion-Mount Carmel Highway (Route 9) towards the East Entrance.

Pass Through the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel: Continue driving through the famous Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. The tunnel is about 1.1 miles long and takes you through the heart of the mountains.

Find the Trailhead Parking Lot: Shortly after exiting the tunnel, look for the Canyon Overlook Trailhead parking lot on your right.

The parking area is small and fills up quickly, so it’s best to arrive early. If there are no spots available, continue a little further to a second overflow parking area on the left. This parking is extremely limited, so we cannot stress enough to get there early to make it to the top for sunrise.

The trail is located by the ranger station on the opposite side of the road from the main parking lot.

Hiking Trail Details

The Canyon Overlook Trail may be short, but it offers a diverse hiking experience and some of the best views in the park.

The trail starts with a series of stone steps and quickly opens to stunning views. As you make your way along the path, you’ll encounter narrow sections with railings for safety.

The trail is well-marked and suitable for most hikers, including families with children.

The trail is a mix of rocky, slick rock, and some switchbacks, so wear appropriate footwear.

Best Time to Hike

The trail is open year-round and always beautiful to hike as long as you are prepared for the weather conditions.

If I had to pick, for most people, it would be during the spring and fall months when the temperatures are mild.

Early mornings and late afternoons are ideal to avoid the midday heat and capture the best light. Summer hikes are also popular, just be prepared for higher temperatures and busier trails.

Photography Tips and Tricks

  • Golden Hour Magic: Aim to hike to make it to the top for the golden hours, shortly after sunrise or before sunset. The soft, warm light enhances the natural beauty of the canyon and creates dramatic shadows. Both sunrise and sunset are great, sunrise has front light while sunset is backlit and creates sun flares.
  • Explore the entire overlook for different angles, you can get some unique shots and avoid crowds.
  • Wide Angle Lens (16 -35): Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of the canyon and sweeping views.
  • Polarizer filter to help reduce haze, so you have richer colors and more contrast.

What to Pack

Even though a short hike you always want to be prepared with these items to make the trip safe and enjoyable!

  • Water and Snacks: 1 liter of water per person
