Choosing where to go is the first step in the travel planning process. Consider your interests, travel style, and budget. Here are some tips to help you decide:

Research Destinations: Look up travel blogs (like this one!), follow travel influencers on Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube, and check out The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World (Lonely Planet) for inspiration (makes a great gift too!).

Start to Build a Bucket List: As you start your travel research, it’s a great idea to start a bucket list of the countries, cities, and activities you dream of experiencing. A well-organized bucket list can be a constant source of inspiration and a helpful planning tool.

  • Organize your list using digital tools: use your phone to store images, notes, and links. Apps like Google Keep or Evernote are great for organizing ideas.
  • Physical Journals: If you prefer a tactile approach, a dedicated bucket list journal lets you jot down your dreams.

Consider the Season: Check the best times to visit your potential destination based on weather, activities, and peak season.

Travel Planning: Set Your Budget

Your budget will influence many aspects of your trip, from your destination to your activities. Here’s how to set a realistic travel budget:

  • Estimate Costs: Include flights, accommodation, food, transportation, activities, and souvenirs.
  • Create a Savings Plan: Set aside money each month leading up to your trip.

Travel Planning: Research and Plan Your Itinerary

A well-researched itinerary can enhance your travel experience: Follow these steps:

  • List Must-See Attractions: Identify the top sights and activities in your destination.
  • Consider Logistics: Plan your days to minimize travel time between locations.
  • Leave Room for Spontaneity: Allow for some flexibility in your schedule.

Travel Planning: Research and Book Your Flights

Finding the best flights involves a bit of strategy. Here’s how to get started:

  • Set Fare Alerts: Sign up for notifications on price drops.
  • Book in Advance: Generally, the best time to book is 6-8 weeks before departure.
  • Sign Up for Frequent Flyer Programs – Booking flights can be one of the most significant expenses of your trip, but leveraging points programs can help save money and enhance your travel experience. Even if you are not a frequent flyer this can help save money.
    • Sign up for Frequent Flyer Programs: Sign up free on airlines websites.
    • Earn Points on Flights: Accumulate points by booking flights directly with the airline or through partner airlines with the same alliance (e.g. Star Alliance, SkyTeam, Oneworld, etc.)
    • Redeem Points: Use your accumulated points to book free or discounted flights, upgrade your flight, and access exclusive lounges.
  • Credit Card Rewards Programs – Many credit cards offer travel rewards programs that allow you to earn points or miles on all purchases. Here’s how to take advantage of them:
    • Choose the Right Card: Look for travel credit cards that offer generous sign-up bonuses, high earning rates on travel and everyday expenses, and flexible redemption options.
    • Transfer Points: Some credit card programs allow you to transfer points to multiple airline partners.
    • Use Points for Flights: Redeem your credit card points directly through the card issuer’s travel portal or transfer them to an airline loyalty program for potential better value.

Accommodations: Where to Stay

Your choice of accommodation can significantly impact your trip. Consider the following:

  • Types of Accommodation: Hotels, hostels, VRBO, and guesthouses each offer different experiences.
  • Location: Choose a location that’s convenient for your planned activities.
  • Read Reviews: Use sites like Booking.com, Expedia, Agoda, Trivago, and Hostelworld to find highly-rated places.

Advice: Here is what I found to work best for me to find the most cost-effective yet highly-rated accommodations in the right location.

  • Travel Solo or on a very tight budget: Use Hostelworld
  • Renting a House: VRBO, but also check the other booking sites below, Booking.com has been cheaper the last two times I have booked a house.
  • Initial Research: Use an aggregator like Trivago, which compares prices for hotels and accommodations from various booking sites. It allows you to quickly and easily find the best deals on lodging.
  • Traveling to Asia, Europe, or the Middle East, Agoda has had the best deals for me.
  • Traveling to South America – Expedia has had the best rates for me.
  • Traveling U.S. /Canada – Compare Agoda, Booking.com, and Expedia, or use the Trivago aggregator to find the best price from these sites.

*TIP 1 – sign up for rewards programs with these booking companies even if you are not a frequent traveler, they are free and will save you money. If you are spending the money anyway get some rewards.

*TIP 2 – compare pricing, you will be surprised how much you can save. I just saved $714 on the same 5-day rental house by comparing different sites.

Transportation: Getting Around

Decide on the best ways to get around your destination:

  • Public Transportation: Research local transit systems, such as buses and trains.
  • Car Rentals: Consider renting a car if you plan to explore more remote areas or is the best mode of transportation for a particular destination. Rentalcars.com is a worldwide car rental service owned by Booking.com that compares the prices of all the major car rental agencies to get you the best price and has an easy booking platform.

*TIP – read current travel blogs on your destination to see how seasoned travelers got around. These will usually give you the best information, so you are well-prepared.

Research and Book Tours and Activities

Booking tours and activities in advance can greatly enhance your travel experience, allowing you to make the most of your time at your destination. Here’s how to efficiently book and plan your activities:

  • Research Popular Activities
    • Explore Travel Guides and Blogs: Look up travel guides, blogs, and social media for recommendations on must-see attractions and activities at your destination.
  • Use Aggregator Sites
    • Viator: A leading platform that offers a wide range of tours and activities worldwide, often with user reviews and ratings.
    • GetYourGuide: Another popular site that provides detailed information on tours, activities, and experiences, with an easy booking process.
    • Klook: Especially for Asia-based travel, Klook offers a variety of activities, tours, and unique experiences, often at discounted prices.
  • Hotel Recommendations
    • Ask your hotel or accommodation provider for recommendations on reliable local tour operators.
  • Consider Group vs. Private Tours
    • Group Tours: These can be more affordable and offer a social experience, but may be less flexible in terms of schedule and activities.
    • Private Tours: These are more expensive but offer personalized itineraries, allowing you to tailor the experience to your interests and preferences.
  • Read the Fine Print
    • Cancellation Policies: Ensure you understand the cancellation policies and refund options in case your plans change.
Inclusions and Exclusions: Check what is included in the tour price (e.g., meals, entrance fees, transportation) to avoid unexpected costs.
  • Book in Advance or On Arrival?
    • Popular Tours: For popular activities or tours with limited availability, it’s advisable to book in advance to secure your spot.
Flexible Itineraries: If you prefer a more spontaneous travel style, you can book some tours and activities upon arrival, though this may limit your options.

Health and Safety

Ensuring your health and safety while traveling is crucial. Follow these tips:

  • Travel Medical Insurance: Purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers health and medical emergencies if traveling outside your country. These policies can be priced differently depending on location, age, and activity, but are shockingly affordable. The two I usually compare are World Nomads and SafetyWing. I would also consider MedJet, which is a medical evacuation subscription coverage insurance, if you are traveling to a remote place with limited medical care, participating in adventure activities, or have complex medical needs.
  • Travel Interruption, Cancelation, or Delay Insurance – You can get this by buying a comprehensive plan through a travel insurance plan (which will include medical) like the two above or checking if your travel credit card used has trip insurance benefits.
  • Vaccinations and Medications: Check if you need any vaccinations for your destination and ensure you have enough supply of all prescribed medications.
  • Stay Informed: Keep updated on any travel advisories for your destinations.

Pack Smart

  • Create a Packing List: Write down everything you’ll need based on your destination, weather, and activities.
  • Pack Light: Make sure items are versatile and must-haves vs. nice-to-haves or just in case. You do not want to be lugging heavy or multiple pieces of luggage in crowded areas or on transportation. Get used to wearing clothing more than once.
  • Choose the right luggage and use packing organizers.
  • Carry-On Bag: The best-case scenario is you only have a carry-on for your trip. If you have a checked bag ensure your carry-on bag has the essentials in case the checked bag is lost: passport, travel documents, medication, and a change of clothes.

Travel Planning Final Preparations

As your trip approaches, finalize the last-minute details:

  • Confirm Reservations: Double-check all your bookings for flights, accommodation, transportation, and activities.
  • Make Copies of Important Documents: Photocopy your passport, visa, travel insurance, and itinerary. Also, have quick access to these on your phone.
  • Notify Your Bank: Inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid issues with your cards (especially debit cards).
