Delicate Arch: Tips for Hiking, Photography, and More

Within the landscape of Arches National Park in Utah, Delicate Arch is arguably the most iconic natural sandstone arch in the world.

The light opening of the arch, standing at 46 feet tall and 32 feet wide, has become a symbol of the American Southwest and is famously depicted on Utah’s license plates (including mine!)

This freestanding arch attracts millions of visitors annually, drawn by its unique beauty and icon status.

Best Time to Visit

Arches National Park sees more than 1.5 million visitors per year, so it is no secret this park is busy most of the time. During the busiest time of year (March through October), it is common to experience significant congestion along the scenic drive and full parking lots at all destinations, even with the timed entry system. Tickets are required from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from April 1st through October 31st.

The best time of day, in my opinion, is to be at your first location at sunrise – see my guide to visiting the 5 Utah National Parks for the best tips and itineraries. For Delicate Arch, sunrise and sunset are both stunning and popular. My first choice would be sunset due to the glow and colors of the setting sun off the Arch, especially for photography.

a graph shows visitation levels throughout the year. The line peaks at Memorial Day and Labor Day with high levels in between.

Summer

Summer in Arches National Park can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 100°F. If visiting during the summer, plan your hike early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the intense midday heat. Despite the heat, this is the most crowed season.

Spring

Spring is an excellent time to visit, with more comfortable temperatures perfect for hiking, biking, canyoneering, and photography. This is one of the most popular times in the park, so crowds are high.

Fall

Fall offers cooler temperatures, making it an ideal time for hiking and photography. The crowds are thinning compared to summer, and the golden autumn light is a plus for photography.

Winter

Winter sees the fewest visitors. While temperatures can be cold, especially in the early morning and evening, the lack of crowds and the possibility of seeing the arch with snow is enticing. Be prepared for icy conditions on the trail.

Hiking to Delicate Arch

The hike to Delicate Arch is a moderately strenuous 3-mile round trip with an elevation gain of 480 feet. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Trailhead: The trail begins at the Wolfe Ranch parking area.
  • Terrain: The hike includes a mix of sandy paths, rock slabs, and a narrow rock ledge near the arch. Proper footwear is recommended.
  • Other Sites: Do not miss the Wolfe Ranch cabin and wall of Ute Native American petroglyphs at the beginning of the hike.
  • Duration: Allow 2-3 hours for the hike, depending on your pace and time spent at the arch
  • Preparation: Bring plenty of water, especially in the summer, and wear sun protection. There is no shade along the trail.

Best Time to Photograph Delicate Arch

Golden Hour

One of the best times to photograph Delicate Arch is during the golden hours, shortly after sunrise and just before sunset. Sunset is my number one choice, however also one of the busiest times at the arch.

  • Sunset is best for the main angles
  • Sunrise is a great time to get creative and find new angles with less people

Blue Hour

The time just before sunrise and just after sunset, when the sky takes on a deep blue hue, contrasts beautifully with the park’s red rock formations.

Astrophotography

Delicate Arch is also a fantastic spot for astrophotography. The clear, dark skies of Arches National Park provide excellent conditions for capturing the Milky Way. Visit during a new moon for best results and bring a tripod and wide-angle lens.

  • Light painting is banned in the park, no waving your headlamp or flashlight around the arch to light up the arch as it is disruptive to wildlife, and others. I have used still low light from a headlamp in the image as long as other viewers and photographers agree and we work together and take turns with people in the arch.

Photography Tips

  • Composition: Use the natural framing of the arch to highlight the surrounding landscape
  • Perspective: Experiment with different angles and perspectives to capture the arch’s grandeur.
  • Patience: Be patient and wait for the right light and fewer people in your shot. There is often a line for people to shoot photos under the arch. We had one person wait in line and then take their turn to leave the arch empty for photographers to shoot quickly with no one in the shot.
  • Download Photopills App – provides photography planning (sunrise, sunset, Milky Way, moon cycle, and more) to plan your photos ahead of time, so you’re always at the right place at the right time to capture the best photo possible.
