Ak-Sai Canyon—also called the Canyon of Forgotten Rivers—is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most striking landscapes.
With its wind-sculpted ridges, sunbaked clay formations, and ancient petroglyphs, it’s a dream for hikers, photographers, and anyone craving a remote overnight adventure.
Located near Lake Issyk-Kul, this lesser-known gem is the perfect mix of raw wilderness and cultural history.

Getting to Ak-Sai Canyon
Your adventure will likely start in Karakol, a hub for outdoor exploration in eastern Kyrgyzstan.
We rented a 4×4 through TST (Travel Service Team) at 4Rent in Karakol—a reliable option for exploring both Sary Jaz and Ak-Sai.
They provided us with a well-kept 1999 Lexus with excellent clearance, which made a huge difference on the rough sections.
- Drive time: About 3.5+ hours from Karakol, depending on traffic and roadwork.
- Road conditions: In July 2025, new highways were under construction, leaving long stretches of dirt roads. A high-clearance vehicle is essential, especially after rain, as the main road into the canyon follows a wash that can become muddy and difficult to pass.
- Navigation tip: Google Maps isn’t as reliable here—download maps.me for offline guidance.
GPS Pins to Know:
- Turn-off from main road: 42.1352175, 76.8361859
- Parking area (short hike start): 42.2082395, 76.8458804
- Top viewpoint: 42.2034064, 76.8391034
Camping & Accommodation Options
One of the best parts of visiting Ak-Sai Canyon is the chance to spend the night in the wild. You can:
- Wild camp: Many scenic spots along Lake Issyk-Kul are close to the trailhead, perfect for stargazing and photography.
- Stay in a yurt – I recommend:
- Feel Nomad Yurt Camp – A cozy, authentic Kyrgyz yurt experience.

The Hike to Ak-Sai Canyon
From the parking area, it’s just a 1-mile round trip hike to the viewpoint. The trail gradually climbs to a ridge where the canyon unfolds into a maze of jagged walls and hidden gullies.
The top viewpoint offers an incredible perspective—especially if you position a subject walking along the ridge for scale in your shots.

Photography Tips
Ak-Sai Canyon’s layered rock textures and dramatic shapes make it a photographer’s playground.
- Best light: Sunset tends to bring out the warm tones in the rock. Sunrise can also be beautiful, but clouds and morning haze can soften the contrast.
- Bring a drone: The aerial perspective reveals the canyon’s vastness in a way ground-level shots can’t match.
- Best shooting spot: The top of the hike (42.2034064, 76.8391034) offers an ideal elevated angle.
- Gear tip: A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the sweeping landscape.
Travel Tips for Visiting Ak-Sai Canyon
- Pack layers: Temperatures can drop sharply at night, even in summer.
- Bring water & snacks: There are no facilities once you leave the main road.
- Respect the land: This is a fragile, remote environment—carry out all trash.
- Fuel up: Fuel up Karakol before the trip, and refuel in Bokonbaevo (about 30 minutes from Ak-Sai on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul.
Why Ak-Sai Canyon is Worth the Trip
What makes Ak-Sai Canyon special is its combination of raw natural beauty, remoteness, and accessibility for a short overnight trip.
Whether you pitch a tent by Issyk-Kul, stay in a yurt, or simply come for the day, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a landscape that feels worlds away from anywhere else.
